"Archive and Memory"  oil on 6 canvases, attached,  38"x 82"  2010

Artist Statement:

My paintings reference the natural world. Each series reveals new aspects of my interest in the rhythms of order and disorder in nature, through rivers, the wilderness, the microscopic and space. From a simple twig, a stand of trees, a thicket of branches to fractal mathematics and universal theories, I explore a process of abstracting and re-abstracting images commonly found in nature.

In addition, my paintings highlight dichotomies such as active to passive, symmetry to randomness, and curvilinear to geometric, drawing attention to the variety of pattern and form which surrounds us. There are elements of microscopic to astronomic, abstract to figurative, and individual in relation to the universal.

My current series of paintings “Liminal,”
presents the threshold, or beginning of day and night, and the time between light and dark, referencing the changing of seasons and the passing of time.  I am interested in memory and loss; the leaves, branches and trees are interrupted with overlays of various structures - precipitation, sound waves, light patterns; man-made verses nature, chance against the predetermined, reality against the imagined, the abstract and the remembered.  Many layers of transparent oil glazes are built up to reveal and conceal elements of the original form, convey obscurity and timelessness, and a sense of the core issues of life and existence.
